1955 Topps Double-Headers (Doubleheaders)
Baseball Cards Set checklist/info

Without a doubt this is my favorite set - PERIOD. Regular issue, test issues, inserts ... whatever ... this is # 1 !!!

Patterned after the famous Mecca Double Folders issued in the early 1900's, these colorful 2 1/16" x 4 7/8" cards are actually 2-cards-in-1! They are perforated in the center and depending on which way you fold the card you create cards of 2 different players. Unperforated 1955 Topps DoubleHeaders can sometimes be found.

A 1955 Topps DoubleHeaders wrapper at left.
All 132 players (66 cards) in the 1955 Topps DoubleHeaders set were also in Topps regular issue. Interestingly, images for the DoubleHeaders were taken from the action images on regular 1955 Topps ..or.. vice-a-versa.
One of the special aspects of this beautiful set is that when layed side-by-side they form spectacular scenes from actual stadiums !!! Old-timers - can you identify the stadiums ?

TOP ROOKIES: Harmon Killebrew & Hal Newhouser
Top STARS: Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Jackie Robinson, Al Kaline, Warren Spahn & MORE !!!

No doubt about it - the best !!!

1961 Topps Baseball Cards
Checklist & Values

The 1961 Topps baseball card set had 587 cards (#1-#598 with some missing numbers). In addition to the missing cards, 2 cards were accidently numbered #463 (the Braves Team card was supposed to be card #426).
1961 Topps set was packed with special "subsets":
League Leaders (10 cards), World Series cards (10), Highlights (11 cards), MVP's (16 cards), Checklists (7 cards plus several variations), Team cards, Special Multi-Player cards, Managers, Topps Rookie All-Star Trophies, & Sporting News All-Stars

Of note - 1961 Topps were the first cards bearing the very popular Topps Rookie All-Star Award Trophies. "High Number" cards (#523-#589) are very scarce.

The least attractive aspect of the 1961 Topps baseball card set were the capless players !!! Baseball expansion led to the problem when Los Angeles Angels were added, the Washington Senators became the Minnesota Twins and the Washington Senators got a new franchise. Because of these changes, tons of players were capless and looked awful. picture you 50 year old grand-dad. Life was obviously tougher back then.

More 1961 Topps card info:
Card #1 was All-American basketball player Dick Groat
Card #2 was Roger Maris, right before his record breaking 61 Home Run season
Mickey Mantle was on (6) 1961 Topps cards adding to the sets cost.

Topps released 3 other sets in 1961: Topps Dice Game, Topps Magic Rub-Offs & Topps Stamps.

Auction's most costly vintage baseball cards

The auction history of vintage baseball cards is long and colorful.

The 1909-1911 T-206 Honus Wagner tobacco card has been auctioned reaching as high as 2.8 million in one auction. Often called the "Holy Grail of Sports Cards", to me it's super-high auction value can mostly be attributed to good PR and "auction fever". It is not even close to being the rarest baseball card and Honus Wagner was not the most popular or important player. Yes, the T-206 set is beautiful and special in it's own right but because of it's huge size and many scarcities, it is not one many collector's ever try to complete, which should keep auction competition way down compared to say the 1933 Goudey or 1952 Topps baseball card issues.
BUT IT DOES NOT...

There is a back story about Wagner banning his card because of his anti-tobacco stance but there are other stories about a more financial consideration.

I am sure you have all heard of the grading company PSA. You may also already have heard that this card was the FIRST card graded by PSA. But did you know that a dealer (B... .a...o) admitted in court to tampering with the card, perhaps by trimming it down to size, before PSA graded it so highly before it was placed in the auction ?

1969 Transogram Statues/Figurines & Cards

The 1969 Transogram Statues/Figurines set contains (60) 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" blank back cards issued on the back of Transogram figurine boxes. The statues were sold in single boxes with one card and also a large box with 3 cards and figurines. Collectors absolutely love the complete boxes and even the cards themselves are becoming more and more difficult to find.

The 1969 Transogram Figurines and cards set is packed with Hall-of-Famers with the top cards belonging to Mickey Mantle, Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays, Pete Rose and Hank Aaron
