1961 Fleer Baseball Cards

1961 Fleer Baseball Box 1961 Fleer Baseball Pack The 1961 Fleer baseball set contained 154 regular-sized cards honoring careers of Hall-of-Famers Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Lou Gehrig, Honus Wagner, Ted Williams and many lesser known old-timers.
Released in 2 series, the 2nd series cards #89-#154 are somewhat tougher to find.

Fleer was prevented from using current players by Topps' exclusive rights, so they issued their Baseball Greats set using retired players, managers, executives and the two league commissioners. Luckily Fleer had their own exclusive rights deal with Ted Williams, who quickly became the most in demand card in the set.

1961 Fleer Baseball Greats Unfortunately the weak card design and retired players made it a giant dud with kids and the product was not well received.
Cards were sold in five-cent packs and packaged with two special inserts; a logo team decal and team pennant sticker of past World Series champions.

1963 Bazooka ALL-TIME GREATS

In 1963, competitive pressures compelled Topps to add a bonus to it's 1963 Bazooka boxes. These cards were inserted inside boxes of Bazooka bubblegum at 5 per box. The 41-card set of Hall-of-Famers features black and white photos of the player inside a gold plaque. A short biography appears on the back, a first (and last) for Bazooka. The 41 numbered cards measure 1 9/16" by 2 1/2". Scarcer silver colored plaques also exist.

1954 Topps Scoops

1954 Topps Scoops 1954 Topps Scoops squeeze 1,000 years of history into a sharp (156) card set. Presented as a newspaper of sorts, the set's wide-ranging subject matter still appeal to collectors today. Released in a two series, each with 78 cards, 1954 Topps Scoops are much smaller than traditional trading cards. Each measures 2 1/16" by 2 15/16". 1954 Topps Scoops Some cards originally came with scratch-off area meant to hide the image. The subject matter in 1954 Topps Scoops covers a lot of ground. Early American history and recent wars figure very prominently. Although the release focuses heavily on non-sports subjects, it isn't without a handful of sports stars. Babe Ruth, Notre Dame's legendary Four Horsemen, Jesse Owens, Joe Louis, Bob Feller and Ben Hogan are among the athletes included in the set. Not surprisingly, the Ruth generates some of the highest prices. 1954 Topps Scoops The 1954 Topps Scoop trading card set is one of the more unique collectible sets as it spans more than 1,000 years of history up to the 1953 baseball season. The set consists of 156 cards measuring 2-1/16” by 2-15/16” and presenting a colorful painting on the front with a caption and date inside a white box. Some cards were originally issued with a scratch-off area meant to hide the headline and can therefor be found with and without the original coating. 1954 Topps Scoops The backs of each appeared as an open newspaper chronicling the event in black-and-white including the headline, date and location at the top. The set delves into the history of disaster with the San Francisco Earthquake (#1), Fire Sweeps Chicago (#2), Rome Burned (#89) and Pompeii Destroyed (#91); war: Battleship Maine Blown Up (#4), Alamo Falls (#8), U.S. Troops Reach France (#21), World War II Begins (#32), Victory in Europe (#57) and Napoleon Loses at Waterloo (##115); achievement: Lindbergh Flies Atlantic (#3), Statue of Liberty Unveiled (#11), Pony Express Starts (#46), Boy Scouts Organized (#123) and Erie Canal Opened (#133); sport: Bob Feller Strikeout King (#27), Dempsey Defeats Willard (#39), Babe Ruth Sets Record (#41), Ederle Swims Channel (#72), Notre Dame’s 4 Horsemen (#110), Jesse Owens Races Horse (#128) and Ben Hogan New Golf King (#129), as well as many more events that shaped the world.

Baseball card collecting terms (part D-F)

Die-Cut A special card that differs from a basic card by "Die-Cutting", cutting away portions of the card to create a special design. Most are serially numbered & limited.

Error Card Baseball card history is filled with error cards, many of them very interesting. Hank Aaron is on 2 of my favorite error cards. Aaron's 1956 Topps card action photo shows Aaron sliding home but it is actually Willie Mays not Aaron. Topps again goofed on Aaron's 1957 "reversed negative" card showing Aaron batting left-handed.

"Error Cards" are usually found early in print runs and often corrected. When this correction happens a VARIATION is created. Some variations are extremely interesting and very expensive while others are totally boring and you wonder why they were even made.

Extended Set Also frequently called Update Set or Traded Set.
They are sets issued after the original release to update the regular set with new and traded players.

Facsimile Autograph is an autograph printed on a card to show what the player's actual signature looks like. They are not "real" autographs.

Factory Set are complete sets usually in special boxes produced by the manufacturer. "Hand-Collated Sets" are sets collectors have put together card by card from packs.
