Extended Set - Also frequently called Update Set or Traded Set.
Facsimile Autograph - a simulated autograph printed on a card designed to show what the player’s actual signature looks like. These are NOT the player’s "real" autograph.
Factory Set - a complete set in a special box and wrapped with a protective covering produced by the manufacturer, usually with a unique seal and sold directly to dealers or card shop owners and not available through the usual retail outlets.
Grade - the physical condition assigned to a card, either by a price guide, or through the assessment made by sellers.
Graded Card - a card which has been assessed for condition by an independent source and given a ranking, with 10 being the best. The card is then placed in a hermetically-sealed plastic holder with the grade designation and player name, card company, card number, and serial number printed on the encasement.
1991 Topps Desert ShieldThe 792 card 1991 Topps Desert Shield Baseball card set was issued by Topps for the soldiers serving in the Gulf War. The Desert Shield set is a variation of Topps regular 1991 baseball card with each card having a special gold-foiled 'Desert Shield' stamp added to the front. Many of the cards, scooped up by military personnel stateside, never made it overseas. The equivalent of approx 6,500 sets of cards were made. Cards are still sought after and fairly scarce with complete sets nearly impossible to find. Be aware of counterfeits. Fakes can easily be determined by comparing the gold foil logo with a real Desert Shield card.
The Chipper Jones rookie is the key card in the set along with the usual super stars like Nolan Ryan, Ken Griffey Jr., Cal Ripken ...
1991 Cardboard Dreams Baseball Cards
Auction's most costly vintage baseball cards
The auction history of vintage baseball cards is long and colorful.
The 1909-1911 T-206 Honus Wagner tobacco card has been auctioned
reaching as high as 2.8 million in one auction.
Often called the "Holy Grail of Sports Cards", to me it's
super-high auction value can mostly be attributed to good PR and
"auction fever". It is not even close to being the rarest baseball
card and Honus Wagner was not the most popular or important player.
Yes, the T-206 set is beautiful and special in it's own right but because
of it's huge size and many scarcities, it is not one many collector's
ever try to complete, which should keep auction competition way down
compared to say the 1933 Goudey or 1952 Topps baseball card issues.
There is a back story about Wagner banning his card because of his anti-tobacco stance but there are other stories about a more financial consideration.
I am sure you have all heard of the grading company PSA. You may also already have heard that this card was the FIRST card graded by PSA. But did you know that a dealer (B... .a...o) admitted in court to tampering with the card, perhaps by trimming it down to size, before PSA graded it so highly before it was placed in the auction ?
1962 Topps Football BucksThe 1962 Topps Football Bucks resembled U.S. currency and measured 1 1/4" x 4 1/4". But ... instead of Abe Lincoln staring at you, it could be Fran Tarkenton !!!
Drawings of the player's home parks along with brief write-ups appeared on the front. The backs included team and league logos. Printing was done with black and green ink on off-white (very thin) paper stock. Bucks are typically found with a fold crease in the middle as they were inserted in packs in that manner.
The 1962 Topps Bucks were inserts in wax packs of the 1962 Topps regular issue football cards. Player selection was super and the featured ROOKIES of Fran Tarkenton and Mike Ditka !!! Also numerous other Hall-of-Famers including JIM BROWN, BART STARR, Y.A. Tittle, Johnny Unitas, Lou Groza and other greats !!!
