1933 Goudey Baseball Cards

1933 Goudey baseball cards were issued during the worst part of The Great Depression. The set ended up at 240 cards (239 printed in 1933 and one in 1934). In an effort to attract collectors, several of the games top players were honored with multiple cards including "The Great Bambino" who appeared on 4 different cards.
The Babe was once asked why he made more than the President of the United States, the Babe answered simply: "I had a better year than he did."

The Elusive Nap Lajoie
One of the most important facts regarding the 1933 Goudey set was their infamous marketing ploy. Goudey took "marketing" to a whole new level to keep people buying packs by never issuing card #106. Collectors wrote the Goudey Card Company complaining. They were rewarded with Goudey sending them the un-issued card #106 (Nap Lajoie) in 1934.

From 1996 thru 2000 SPx baseball was Upper Deck's top end premium issue. What made them excel was the advanced printing technology. From year to year SPx cards varied but always offered something special from die-cuts, holograms, metal looking insets, various levels of scarcity of parallel issues, limited edition autographed base cards, limited edition serially numbered labelled Rookie cards, relatively scarce insert sets ... which gave them a premium look and feel. Most were on a super thick premium card stock, several times the weight and thickness of regular baseball cards.

Baseball card collecting terms (part A)

Airbrushing is the art of touching up a photo prior to the card being printed. It was generally done to remove imperfections or update or hide a players jersey/cap logo. Because of advancements in print technology and computers this is no longer needed.

All-Star card (AS) usually a subset card picturing a player who participated in the previous season’s all-star game. Topps created these in their 1958 High Number issue and has continued the practice fairly regularly to date. Such cards are usually designated in price guides with the abbreviation of AS.

Assorted A general mix of cards often containing many duplicates.

Auction items are sold to the highest bidder. Auctions used to be live or thru the mail/phone but today most auctions are online.

Auction Catalog lists the rules and descriptions and often images of the items in an auction.

Authentication verification that an item (card, autograph) is genuine. Most "game-used" material inserts have a written declaration of authenticity on the reverse. Authorized Issue card or memorabilia item that has been properly licensed. If the item is of a player, his written permission must be given in order for it to be considered authorized.
