In hockey, there were a few sets issued in the 1910's and while O-Pee-Chee issued some sets in the 1930's, the real modern sets began in 1951 with the itroduction of Parkhurst's first set.
In racing, while cards go back as far as the early Indy car days of 1911, modern racing sets began in 1988 with the issues released by MAXX.
1993 Topps Finest RefractorsIn 1993 Topps raised the bar on premium cards with their 199-card issue of 'Hi-Tech' chrome like baseball cards - 1993 Topps Finest with 'Refractors'. Part of what made the 1993 Topps Finest set so appealing is that it was limited to just 199 cards instead of Topps usual 792 to 850+. 199 cards - just enough for the top 7 players per team. With the entire set filled with stars and minor stars, Topps set Finest apart as their top or ‘Finest’ set. Not only was this the 'Finest' set ever but it had only the 'Finest' players !
Randomly inserted in some of the packs were rare hi-gloss 'Refractors'. 'Refractors' looked so much like the regular card that Unless you knew what to look for you could miss them. It is thought that only 241 'Refractors' were made of each card making them one of the first and one of the scarcest insert parallel issues. 'Refractors' are in high demand even today and often get sky high prices on both graded and ungraded cards.
Set is packed with superstars like Nolan Ryan, Ken Griffey Jr., Cal Ripken, Ozzie Smith, Don Mattingly, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, George Brett, ...
Chemtoy and MLB teamed up in 1970 to offer a set of major league baseball player 'superballs'.
The 285 'superball' set has 12 from each team except Minn., Chicago
and Oakland with 11 and is packed with HALL-OF-FAMERS !!!
Each 'superball' has the player's photo inside and the player's name,
team, position and Chemtoy inventory number on the back.
Vintage Baseball Card Auction terminologyRegister: You give us your name, address and email so we can contact you after the auction with your winning bids.
2 Types of Bidding: There are 2 ways to bid in the auction.
Minimum or Starting bid: On expensive auction items, there is no point in auction bids starting at .25 and going up by .25 taking perhaps 100 such bids to reach even 10% of value. Thus some items in auctions have a "Minimum" or "Starting Bid".
Reserve bid: "Reserve" auction bids come into play once an auction is over. If the final "Hammer" price is less than the "Reserve" bid then there is no sale. I do not find this type of auction bidding very bidder friendly.
1993 Topps Inaugural RockiesIn 1993 Topps produced a limited number of special gold foil enhanced factory sets to honor the first season of the Colorado Rockies. A special gold foil Rockies logo was added to all the cards.
With an initial print run of 5,000, the Rockies had another 5,000 sets made for
a total of only 10,000 total factory sets. Since cards were only available as
factory sets which most collectors kept complete. and no packs were sold
making singles and team sets quite a bit tougher to find.
