Bowman Gum Company had rights to produce NFL football cards from 1948 thru 1952. 1951 Bowman football cards were available in 6-card packs for a nickle and single-card packs for a penny !!! Each with a piece of gum. WHAT A BARGAIN !!! The top rookie card in this set is of future Cowboys Hall-of-Famer Tom Landry.

1976 Popsicle Football Teams
Cards checklist


There is one card for each NFL team in the 1976 Popsicle football card set PLUS a variation of the New York Giants. The Giants changed logos in 1976, but Popsicle didn't know so one card shows team's 1975 helmet and the corrected shows the 1976 helmet.

The cards are like thin plastic credit cards and held up well as apparently they came one per box of Popsicles.

1969 CITGO Coins

1969 Citgo Coin banner In 1969, to commemorate Baseball's 100th Anniversary, CITGO released their "Famous Baseball Player Coin Collection" of 20 brass coated metal coins. On the front, the coins featured the player's name and a raised image of his head. The back displayed a banner honoring baseball's s 100th Anniversary. The coins are approx. 1" in diameter and are very susceptible to tarnishing due to oxidation.

Customers received a single coin in it's sealed pack free with a fill-up and could pay 25 cents for additional coins. The 20 coin set could be inserted into a cardboard backing for display. On the back of the display was a short bio with stats of each player. Click to view an image of the cardboard backing and some more sample coins:

How long have sports cards been around ? (part 2)

The first important and mainstream basketball set was issued by Bowman in 1948. Other than a Topps set in 1957-58 and a 1961-62 Fleer set, there were no mainstream basketball sets issued until Topps started producing yearly sets beginning with their 1969-70 set featuring the rookie card of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who then went under the name of Lew Alcindor.

In hockey, there were a few sets issued in the 1910's and while O-Pee-Chee issued some sets in the 1930's, the real modern sets began in 1951 with the itroduction of Parkhurst's first set.

In racing, while cards go back as far as the early Indy car days of 1911, modern racing sets began in 1988 with the issues released by MAXX.
