Don Drysdale Baseball Cards

Don Drysdale

Pirates shortstop Dick Groat claimed �Batting against Don Drysdale is the same as making a date with the dentist.�

According to Orlando Cepeda: �The trick against Drysdale is to hit him before he hits you.�

Drysdale retired with (154) batters hit by a pitch, the modern baseball record.

Frank Robinson said "He was mean enough to do it, and he did it continuously. You could count on him doing it.

His next at-bat after hitting a HR and yelling 'Hey, batboy, come get the bat.'" Drysdale plunked Gene Oliver, yelling 'Hey, batboy, come get Oliver.'"

Don Drysdale twice hit seven home runs in a season, tying the record. NOTE:Ohtani it (7) in 2024.

He pitched (58) consecutive scoreless innings in 1968, breaking Walter Johnson's all-time Major League record.

1979 Topps Baseball Cards
Checklist & Values

Highlights of the 1979 Topps baseball card set are:
* Hall-of-Famer Ozzie Smith's rookie card,
* (2) Bump Wills variations; Rangers and the ERROR Blue Jays,
* Special All-Time Leaders with Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Nolan Ryan...
* Packed as (37) or more cards featured Hall-of-Famers !!!
Given all of the above, the 1979 set is very affordable.
TOP ROOKIES were Hall-of-Famers Eddie Murray, Paul Molitor, Alan Trammell & Jack Morris.
NOTE: Ozzie Smith is by far the most value card in the set. Unfortuantely, for some reason, it suffered from poor sheet cutting and most Ozzie rookies are well off center.

Baseball card collecting terms (part D-F)

Die-Cut A special card that differs from a basic card by "Die-Cutting", cutting away portions of the card to create a special design. Most are serially numbered & limited.

Error Card Baseball card history is filled with error cards, many of them very interesting. Hank Aaron is on 2 of my favorite error cards. Aaron's 1956 Topps card action photo shows Aaron sliding home but it is actually Willie Mays not Aaron. Topps again goofed on Aaron's 1957 "reversed negative" card showing Aaron batting left-handed.

"Error Cards" are usually found early in print runs and often corrected. When this correction happens a VARIATION is created. Some variations are extremely interesting and very expensive while others are totally boring and you wonder why they were even made.

Extended Set Also frequently called Update Set or Traded Set.
They are sets issued after the original release to update the regular set with new and traded players.

Facsimile Autograph is an autograph printed on a card to show what the player's actual signature looks like. They are not "real" autographs.

Factory Set are complete sets usually in special boxes produced by the manufacturer. "Hand-Collated Sets" are sets collectors have put together card by card from packs.
