In hockey, there were a few sets issued in the 1910's and while O-Pee-Chee issued some sets in the 1930's, the real modern sets began in 1951 with the itroduction of Parkhurst's first set.
In racing, while cards go back as far as the early Indy car days of 1911, modern racing sets began in 1988 with the issues released by MAXX.
1958 Hires Root BeerHires Root Beer issued this 66 card set back in 1958. The cards came with an attached advertising tab. Cards with their tab intact are extremely difficult to find and thus are quite expensive. The actual card size varies from 2-3/8 in. to 2-5/8 in. wide and 3-3/8 in. to 3-5/8 in. high without the tab. Cards are numbered from #10 thru #76 with #69 not issued.
The card design - a wood grain "knot hole" through which the player is viewed - is a collector's favorite and was brought back by Bowman for their 2003 Bowman Heritage product. Although small at only 66 cards, the set did contain it's share of cards of Hall-of-Famers and Superstars such as Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Pee Wee Reese, Don Drysdale, Richie Ashburn, Bill Mazeroski, Duke Snider, Larry Doby, Don Newcombe and others...
1963 Topps Peel-Offs (stickers)Another of the interesting Topps Issues of the 1960's !
Topps inserted these Peel-Offs (stickers) also called Stick-Ons in several of series of their 1963 Topps baseball cards. Interestingly, the Peel-Offs inserts were not mentioned or advertised on wax pack wrappers in 1963.
The complete 1963 Topps Peel-oFFs set is packed with HALL-OF-FAMERS and contains 46 stickers measuring 1-1/4" x 2-3/4". The Peel-Offs come in 2 distinct variations. They can be found either with instructions printed on the back or the much scarcer blank-back variation.
The Peel-Offs have with an approx. 3/16" "white" band running left to right across the mug shot. This band appears to be lighter than the printing above and below it. Theory is that it is an aging effect caused by the backing strip.
TOP STARS: Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron, Sandy Koufax, Stan Musial, Al Kaline, Carl Yastrzemski, Ernie Banks and tons MORE !!!

1974 Topps DECKLE EDGEThis 72-card test issue set was released with a very limited distribution only the East Coast around Massachusetts making them quite scarce. They were officially simply called "Topps Baseball Photos" but their serrated or "DECKLED" edge gave them the name they go by today. The 2 7/8" x 5" inch cards were sold in either a 2 card pack with gum or a 3 card pack with no gum for 5 cents.

The fronts look similar to the black and white Exhibit Postcards from the 50's and 60's featuring a photo with a facsimile blue autograph. The backs make this very scarce test issue even more interesting ! They feature handwritten script of the player's name, team, position & date and location of the photograph as well as a mock newspaper article on the player's career.
This was Topps 2nd "Deckle Edge" issue, their first being the smaller and much more common 1969 Topps Deckle Edge which were inserts in certain 1969 Topps packs.
Variations of 1974 Topps Deckle Edge do exist, making this issue even more fun and challenging to collect. The backs can be found in either gray or a much scarcer white version. Also, a more limited proof version with non-scalloped edges exists and can be found with and without card numbers.

1993 Topps Finest RefractorsIn 1993 Topps raised the bar on premium cards with their 199-card issue of 'Hi-Tech' chrome like baseball cards - 1993 Topps Finest with 'Refractors'. Part of what made the 1993 Topps Finest set so appealing is that it was limited to just 199 cards instead of Topps usual 792 to 850+. 199 cards - just enough for the top 7 players per team. With the entire set filled with stars and minor stars, Topps set Finest apart as their top or ‘Finest’ set. Not only was this the 'Finest' set ever but it had only the 'Finest' players !
Randomly inserted in some of the packs were rare hi-gloss 'Refractors'. 'Refractors' looked so much like the regular card that Unless you knew what to look for you could miss them. It is thought that only 241 'Refractors' were made of each card making them one of the first and one of the scarcest insert parallel issues. 'Refractors' are in high demand even today and often get sky high prices on both graded and ungraded cards.
Set is packed with superstars like Nolan Ryan, Ken Griffey Jr., Cal Ripken, Ozzie Smith, Don Mattingly, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, George Brett, ...
