Q5: What are some useful to know baseball card collecting terms ?

(part 1)
Certificate Of Authenticity - a document that is used to verify the legitimacy of a collectible. In reality, it is worthless, unless it shares a counterfeit- proof serially-numbered hologram that is attached to the item, and the certificate bears the signature of a notary public, or written verification by the manufacturer.

Common - any card which is not short-printed, an insert, a bonus card, or has an insertion ratio. In short, the cards that comprise the manufacturer’s basic set.

Condition - the physical appearance of a card/collectible. Centering, corner wear, photo clarity, edges, the presence of foreign material, signs of misuse are the critical components. Along with rarity/scarcity, it is a major factor in determining the value of a card or collectible.

Crease - an obvious paper wrinkle defect usually caused by bending the card [i.e.- the result of being tortured on a rear-wheel bicycle spoke during the early ‘50s and ‘60s].

Die-Cut - an insert/parallel card that differs from the basic card by a process of the manufacturer "cutting" portions of the card revealing a special design. Recent issues may also be individually and serially-numbered.

1963 Fleer Baseball

In 1960 & 1961 Fleer produced baseball card sets of old-timers like Ruth,Gehrig & Cobb, ... but kids weren't impressed. They wanted current stars. Fleer had to try something new ... COOKIES !!!     In an attempt by Fleer to circumvent Topps exclusive rights to baseball cards, they issued their 1963 baseball cards with cherry flavored cookies instead of gum.

The 1963 Fleer baseball card issue was most likely intended to be a much larger set issued in multiple series but Topps sued Fleer after the first series was released stopping further production. Due to Topps deep pockets Fleer soon pulled the set from the market leaving this very popular set at just 66 cards plus an unnumbered checklist.

But what a 66 cards!!!   The 1963 Fleer cards are attractive and feature an extremely high percentage of stars led by Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente & Sandy Koufax along with 2 very scare Short Prints: Joe Adcock and the checklist.

The most interesting card in this set is the Maury Wills Rookie card. Even though Wills started his major league career with the Dodgers way back in 1959 quickly becoming a superstar, his 1963 Fleer card is considered his rookie ! How is this possible ? Well, back in 1959, 1960 and 1961, Topps did not consider Wills worthy enough to have a baseball card.

As hobby lore has it: Wills was quite upset at this slight from Topps. After Wills won the 1962 N.L. MVP award, Topps quickly came a knocking but Wills said "NO THANKS!". From 1961 thru 1966, Wills prevented Topps from making his cards. Wills and Topps finally made up making his 1967 Topps high number short print his first Topps card and also his most expensive card. Adding interest to the Wills baseball card story, Post Cereal released a Maury Wills card in their 1961 set making that an earlier Maury Wills rookie. Wills was also pictured on a 1960 Topps card featuring the 1959 World Series. That card featured Luis Aparicio stealing 2nd base with Wills pictured trying to make the tag.

Much of the above is true but Wills has said there was no "feud" with Topps and that he simply had signed exclusive agreements with Fleer.

1961 Topps Baseball Cards
Checklist & Values

The 1961 Topps baseball card set had 587 cards (#1-#598 with some missing numbers). In addition to the missing cards, 2 cards were accidently numbered #463 (the Braves Team card was supposed to be card #426).
1961 Topps set was packed with special "subsets":
League Leaders (10 cards), World Series cards (10), Highlights (11 cards), MVP's (16 cards), Checklists (7 cards plus several variations), Team cards, Special Multi-Player cards, Managers, Topps Rookie All-Star Trophies, & Sporting News All-Stars

Of note - 1961 Topps were the first cards bearing the very popular Topps Rookie All-Star Award Trophies. "High Number" cards (#523-#589) are very scarce.

The least attractive aspect of the 1961 Topps baseball card set were the capless players !!! Baseball expansion led to the problem when Los Angeles Angels were added, the Washington Senators became the Minnesota Twins and the Washington Senators got a new franchise. Because of these changes, tons of players were capless and looked awful. picture you 50 year old grand-dad. Life was obviously tougher back then.

More 1961 Topps card info:
Card #1 was All-American basketball player Dick Groat
Card #2 was Roger Maris, right before his record breaking 61 Home Run season
Mickey Mantle was on (6) 1961 Topps cards adding to the sets cost.

Topps released 3 other sets in 1961: Topps Dice Game, Topps Magic Rub-Offs & Topps Stamps.
