Q7: What are some additional useful to know baseball card collecting terms ?

High Numbers - vintage cards were issued in the ‘50s-‘70s in a series. During the baseball season, the largest number of cards were made. As the schedule progressed into September, when there would be less interest in baseball cards , Topps for one, specifically decreased production and hence much less product was available. As a result, a scarcity-factor was created and a premium holds for these first type of "short-printed" cards.

Inserts - special randomly-inserted cards which are not part of the regular set. Many modern inserts are sequentially-numbered and rarer than the card sets into which they are inserted.

O-Pee-Chee / OPC - a subsidiary of Topps, this card issue was produced specifically for distribution in Canada.

Promotional Card - generally referred to as cards issued to show what the product will look like on release and intended to help spur future sales. Often called a "promo" card.

Reprint - cards issued to reproduce the originals. With the current trend of vintage reprints, the new versions have a distinguishing characteristic evidenced by numbering.

Restored - a card or piece of memorabilia which someone has tried to return to a "like-new" condition. A restored card is considered to be of very little value.

Rookie Card - any league-licensed, widely distributed card to feature a player in his first year of trading cards.

Series - a group of cards within an issue deliberately split up by the manufacturer to distribute at different times of the year. (i.e.- vintage 1st series cards 1-100 were released in April and 2nd series cards 101-200 were released in July, etc.).

Short Print (SP) - a card printed to a lesser quantity than other cards in a set. Many recent short prints are also individually & serially-numbered.

1952 Topps Baseball Cards

1952 is often thought of as Topps 1st baseball card set, but it was not.
Topps issued the following baseball card sets prior to their huge 1952 set:
• 1948 Topps Magic Photos
• 1951 Topps Red Backs
• 1951 Topps Blue Backs
• 1951 Topps Connie Mack's All-Stars
• 1951 Topps Major League All-Stars

The 1951 Red & Blue Back issues (52 cards each) were similar to a deck of cards and could be used to play a baseball card game. The sets left out all the game's stars and were not fan favorites keeping Bowman far ahead in the baseball card market.

In response, Topps issued their "BIGGER is BETTER" 1952 Topps set they described as: "GIANT IN BOTH SIZE and NUMBER of CARDS" (407).

Series one cards (#1-80) can be found with black or red backs. The key card in the 1952 Topps set is card #311 MICKEY MANTLE. It is often called Mickey Mantle's Rookie card but it is not. The honor goes to his 1951 Bowman card. The 1952 Topps set also featured my favorite and THE greatest player of all-time, WILLIE MAYS !!! Again, this is sometimes called Willie Mays' Rookie card but it is not. That honor also goes to his 1951 Bowman card. Another 1952 Topps card of note is card #1 Andy Pafko. Pafko, a fine player, is basically just a "Common card" and should be worth no more than any other "Common" in the 1952 Topps set - But SURPRIZE !!! It's worth TONS more because it's card #1 and absorbed much more damage than most cards from rubber bands and other damage, thus high grade cards are very, very tough to find accounting for the super high values.
BUT --- That should not account for the super high asking prices on lower grade copies. THose prices do not make sense (supply and demand).

The 6th (last) series, starts with #311 Mickey Mantle and ends with #407 Braves Hall-of-Famer Eddie Mathews. These "High Numbers" are significantly scarcer and can almost be called rare. In addition to Mickey Mantle, other star High Numbers included #312 Jackie Robinson and #314 Roy Campanella.

The most common explanation for their scarcity is as follows.
This HUGE set was released in series weeks apart. When it came to the last series the baseball season was winding down and football was starting. Most candy store owners had boxes of baseball cards leftover from earlier in the year so most eliminated their orders for the 6th series of 1952 Topps thus creating the scarcity.

To add interest to the story, it is often said that the unsold 6th series cards (including THOUSANDS of 1952 Topps MICKEY MANTLEs !!!) were disposed of by Topps, dumped offshore into the Atlantic Ocean like most of New York's trash in those days.

1974 Topps Stamps

The 1974 Topps Stamps set contains (240) 1x1-1/2 inch stamps, 10 from each team. The unnumbered stamps show the player's photo with name, team & position inside a colored oval near the bottom. Issued in horizontal 12-stamp panels (2 rows of 6), the panels came in different combinations of rows so there are actually 24 different panels (w/288 stamps) in a complete 1974 Topps Stamps panel set.
So player collectors - your favorite may appear on 2 different panels !!!

This issue was cursed with production problems. Centering is horrible with most panels having little or no border on one side or the other. In addition, perforations on most panels were not in the proper place.

1974 Topps stamps are easily confused with 1969 Topps stamps. With a somewhat similar player selection, the major difference is 1974's oval vs 1969's banner at the bottom. Also 1969 stamps came in both vertical & horizontal panels.

To store the stamps, Topps supposedly issued a set of 24 albums, one for each team. Each album contained a complete 10-stamp team set. I say "supposedly" because I've never actually seen one in person and the very few I've seen online often state "test issue" when describing them. ??? But there was supposed to be one in each pack ??? Where are they ??? The 1969 albums, also 1 per pack, are all over the place. I'm guessing they may not have actually been released.

The set is packed with SuperStars including over 23 Hall-of-Famers including greats Nolan Ryan, Hank Aaron,Johnny Bench, Ernie Banks, Pete Rose, Reggie Jackson, Al Kaline, Joe Morgan, Willie Stargell, Tom Seaver & more !!! Also making appearances are seldom seen ROOKIES of Dave Winfield and Dave Parker.

1968 Topps Action All-Star Stickers
Baseball Cards Set checklist/info

 Another one of my favorite Topps test issues !!!   In 1968, trying to catch the fancy of young collectors, Topps produced a set of "Baseball Action Stickers", often called "Action All-Stars Stickers". It was a big year for Topps test/oddball issues. Topps 1968 offerings also included Game cards, Player Posters, 3-D cards, Plaks, Discs and Punchouts.

The Topps 1968 "Baseball Action Stickers" set consists of 16 numbered 3-part vertical sticker panel strips containing individually removable, die-cut stickers; loaded with stars like Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Clemente, Seaver (2nd year), Yastrzemski ... While there are (16) different three-panel stickers in the set, only 12 contain totally different panels. Stickers #13 thru #16 mix and matched previously used panels making 36 different panels, not 48.

Each strip (15 3/4" tall and 3 1/4" wide) was made up of three 3 1/4 x 5 1/4 inch panels, perforated at the joints for separation. Each three-panel strip featured a large image of a star player in the center panel, with smaller pictures of three players on the top and bottom panels. Facsimile autographs accompanied the large sticker and some, but not all of the smaller stickers. The manila-colored, peel-able back is blank-backed. The full strip was folded along the 2 perforations and inserted into it's pack.

Sold in 1-sticker packs in 1968 with 12 packs per box; at ten cents a pack, sets could be put together for just $1.60. Today, if you could find them, a mid four figures or more would be needed to build a set. Today a complete 3-panel sticker with Mantle in the center commands up to $2,000 alone.

Complete strips with the 3-panels still attached are so scarce and fragile AND EXPENSIVE that collectors usually collect individual panels and the grading companies including PSA grade the individual panels. The single panels themselves are quite scarce and in the 23 years PSA has been around they have graded just over 200 of them TOTAL. That's less than 9 per year !!! The pop report is on the average of only 4 to 5 of each individual panel !!! To put that into perspective, PSA has graded 1,132 1952 Topps Mickey Mantles !!! Collectors who understand the concept of supply and demand know how cool these are and if you pass them by, it might be awhile before they pass by again.

Proofs without the perforations have shown up over the years, usually from the Topps vault sale. Note - this proof sheet is missing the facsimile autographs.
