In hockey, there were a few sets issued in the 1910's and while O-Pee-Chee issued some sets in the 1930's, the real modern sets began in 1951 with the itroduction of Parkhurst's first set.
In racing, while cards go back as far as the early Indy car days of 1911, modern racing sets began in 1988 with the issues released by MAXX.
1968 Topps Action All-Star Stickers
Another one of my favorite Topps test issues !!!
In 1968, trying to catch the fancy of young collectors, Topps produced a set of
"Baseball Action Stickers", often called "Action All-Stars Stickers".
It was a big year for Topps test/oddball issues. Topps 1968 offerings also included Game cards,
Player Posters, 3-D cards, Plaks, Discs and Punchouts.
1977 Topps Cloth StickersAs the 1977 baseball season was winding down, Topps decided we needed more cards and released a baseball card test issue called "1977 Topps Cloth Stickers". The 1977 Topps Cloth Stickers set was made up of (73) cards, (55) cloth stickers of the 1977 season's top players plus (18) checklist/puzzle cards that when joined together formed 9-piece photos of the 1976 American and National League All-Star teams.
The stickers were sold in 15¢ packs with 2 players stickers and 1 checklist/puzzle card per pack; 36 packs per box.
The fronts of the Cloth Stickers were basically the same as the regular issue with
most of the photos identical - but there were differences
including Nolan Ryan.
The 2½" by 3½" stickers were made of a light, sticky-backed cloth with a paper backing
listing the player's career highlights and instructions on how to use the cloth sticker.
Morgan, Palmer, Perez, Ryan, Schmidt, Seaver, Stargell, Sutton, Winfield, Yastrzemski, Yount
ALSO: Pete Rose and a scarcer Mark Fidrych ROOKIE card !!!
Dave Winfield (last game in 1995) was the last active player with a card in this set.
1969 Topps StampsFollowing stints as inserts in 1961 and 1962, stamps finally arrived with their own issue in 1969 ! A nickel for a 12-stamp strip plus a mini album !!!
The 1969 Topps Stamps set contained (240) 1x1-7/16 inch unnumbered stamps with player's photo and name, team & position inside a colored banner. The stamps were released in both horizontal (2 rows of 6) & vertical (2 columns of 6). 1969 Topps Stamps are often confused with Topps' 1974 issue. The 1974 Stamps have ovals rather than banners at bottom and came only in horizontal 12-stamp panels.
To store the stamps, Topps issued a set of 24 mini albums, one for each team. The booklets were the same size as a baseball card and held a complete 10-stamp team set. More fun for kids, the back cover had facsimile autographs of all the players in the team set. The design is nearly identical to the Topps 1969 football 4-in-1 stamp booklets.
The 1969 Topps Stamps set is packed with stars like Pete Rose and tons of Hall-of-Famers including MICKEY MANTLE, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente & many more !!!
