(part 3) Inserts - special randomly-inserted cards which are not part of the regular set. Many modern inserts are sequentially-numbered and rarer than the card sets into which they are inserted. O-Pee-Chee / OPC - a subsidiary of Topps, this card issue was produced specifically for distribution in Canada. Promotional Card - generally referred to as cards issued to show what the product will look like on release and intended to help spur future sales. Often called a "promo" card. Reprint - cards issued to reproduce the originals. With the current trend of vintage reprints, the new versions have a distinguishing characteristic evidenced by numbering. Restored - a card or piece of memorabilia which someone has tried to return to a "like-new" condition. A restored card is considered to be of very little value. Rookie Card - any league-licensed, widely distributed card to feature a player in his first year of trading cards. Series - a group of cards within an issue deliberately split up by the manufacturer to distribute at different times of the year. (i.e.- vintage 1st series cards 1-100 were released in April and 2nd series cards 101-200 were released in July, etc.). Short Print (SP) - a card printed to a lesser quantity than other cards in a set. Many recent short prints are also individually & serially-numbered.
History of Football Cards (T3)The first football card appeared over 100 years ago? 1894 Mayo football cards were the first known cards depicting football players. This set contained 35 cards of the top Ivy League players including one of the most sought after football cards ever made with less than 10 known copies. Picturing an unnamed player, believed to be John Dunlop from Harvard, it is valued at around $18,000 in EX-MINT condition. In 1933, Goudey Gum Company released a multi-sport "Sport Kings" set. This popular set included cards of Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, Knute Rockne along with many other greats from many other sports including Baseball and Boxing. It took 15 years for the next football card set when Bowman and Leaf football cards hit the market. There have been football card sets issued ever year since.

1963 Topps StickersAnother of the interesting Topps Issues of the 1960's !Topps inserted these Stick-Ons (stickers) in several of series of their 1963 Topps baseball cards. Interestingly, the Stick-On inserts were not mentioned or advertised on wax pack wrappers in 1963. The complete 1963 Topps Stick-Ons set is packed with HALL-OF-FAMERS and contains 46 stickers measuring 1-1/4" x 2-3/4". The Stick-Ons come in 2 distinct variations. They can be found either with blank-backs or the scarcer variation with instructions printed on the back. The Stick-Ons have with an approx. 3/16" "white" band running left to right across the mug shot. This band appears to be lighter than the printing above and below it. Theory is that it is an aging effect caused by the backing strip. 1969 Topps StampsThis was Topps 3rd stamp issue in the last eight years and it was a good one !!! The stamps were not inserts but a totally separate issue . For a nickel you got a strip of twelve stamps plus a mini album. The 1969 Topps Stamps complete set contains 240 stamps. The 1 x 1-7/16 inch stamps were unnumbered and featured a color photo with the player's name, team and position inside a colored banner at the bottom of the stamp. The stamps were released in both vertical and horizontal strips of 12 stamps. The 1969 Topps Stamps are often confused with Topps' 1974 issue. The 1974 Topps Stamps have ovals rather than banners at the bottom and were released only in 12-stamp horizontal panels.Along with the stamps, Topps also issued a set of 24 albums, one per team, to store them in. The 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" orange albums were the same size as a baseball card and held a complete 10-stamp team set. To add even more collecting fun, the album's back cover had facsimile autographs of the ten players shown in the album. The 1969 Topps Stamps set is packed with stars like Pete Rose along with tons of Hall-of-Famers including MICKEY MANTLE, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente & many, many more !!! |
