History of Football Cards (T3)

The first football card appeared over 100 years ago? 1894 Mayo football cards were the first known cards depicting football players. This set contained 35 cards of the top Ivy League players including one of the most sought after football cards ever made with less than 10 known copies. Picturing an unnamed player, believed to be John Dunlop from Harvard, it is valued at around $18,000 in EX-MINT condition.

In 1933, Goudey Gum Company released a multi-sport "Sport Kings" set. This popular set included cards of Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, Knute Rockne along with many other greats from many other sports including Baseball and Boxing. It took 15 years for the next football card set when Bowman and Leaf football cards hit the market. There have been football card sets issued ever year since.

1962 Topps Baseball Bucks

Another Hit Topps Test Issue from the 1960's !!!
The 1962 Topps Bucks were one of Topps most creative Test Issues. Each "Buck" resembled U.S. currency and measured 1 3/4" x 4 1/8" but instead of George Washington staring at you, it could be Mickey Mantle !!! A drawing of the player's home park along with a brief write-up also appeared on the front. The backs included team and league logos.

The 1962 Topps Bucks test issue was sold in it's own 1 cent wax packs and was not an insert in 1962 Topps wax packs. Most examples exist with a fold line but it should not be overly noticeable. Player selection was great as the set is packed with numerous Hall-of-Famers including MICKEY MANTLE, Willie Mays, Sandy Koufax, Roberto Clemente, Carl Yastrzemski, Stan Musial, Al Kaline, Brooks Robinson, Don Drysdale, Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron and more !!!

1974 Topps Stamps

Topps released this 240 stamp issue in 1974. These 1 by 1 1/2 stamp are unnumbered and feature a color photo with the player's name, team and position inside a colored oval at the bottom of the stamp. Very similar to their 1969 Topps Stamps issue, the 1974 Topps Stamps were issued in panels of 12 stamps. Alomg with the stamps, Topps also issued a set of 24 stamp albums, one per team, to store the stamps. Due to double prints and different combinations of stamps on panels there are actually 24 different 12-Stamp panels. The stamps were not inserts but a totally separate issue and were sold in packs containing one 12-Stamp panel along with one stamp album.

The 1974 Topps Stamps set is packed with SuperStars including over 23 members of the Baseball Hall-of-Fame with greats such as Nolan Ryan, Hank Aaron, Johnny Bench, Ernie Banks, Pete Rose, Reggie Jackson, Al Kaline, Joe Morgan, Willie Stargell, Tom Seaver and plenty more !!! The set even contains seldom seen ROOKIES of Dave Winfield and Dave Parker.
