(part 2)
Extended Set - Also frequently called Update Set or Traded Set. Facsimile Autograph - a simulated autograph printed on a card designed to show what the player’s actual signature looks like. These are NOT the player’s "real" autograph. Factory Set - a complete set in a special box and wrapped with a protective covering produced by the manufacturer, usually with a unique seal and sold directly to dealers or card shop owners and not available through the usual retail outlets. Grade - the physical condition assigned to a card, either by a price guide, or through the assessment made by sellers. Graded Card - a card which has been assessed for condition by an independent source and given a ranking, with 10 being the best. The card is then placed in a hermetically-sealed plastic holder with the grade designation and player name, card company, card number, and serial number printed on the encasement.
![]() History of Basketball Cards (T4)The first major basketball card issue was released by Bowman Gum Company in 1948. Topps entered the market in 1957. At the time interest was minimal in professional basketball and the Topps issue was considered a failure. Basketball cards were in direct competition with baseball cards at a time when baseball was the nationally broadcasted America's sport. Collectors were not yet ready for basketball or basketball cards and Topps quickly left the basketball card market after just 1 year not to return till 1969. In the 1960's there was rising interest in basketball and basketball card collecting took off, much like baseball card collecting thirty years earlier. In the 1970's basketball cards started to gain popularity and reached a peak in the 1980's and 1990's, partially attribuable to the great Michael Jordan. Today, high grade vintage basketball cards of greats like Jerry West, Bob Cousy, Wilt Chamberlain and Bob Pettit can run into the hundreds and thousands of dollars. Joining them are more recent stars like Kareem Abdul-Jabar, Larry Byrd, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan. Even though basketball cards got a much later start than baseball cards and football cards they are now a part of America's collecting heritage.

1963 Topps StickersAnother of the interesting Topps Issues of the 1960's !Topps inserted these Stick-Ons (stickers) in several of series of their 1963 Topps baseball cards. Interestingly, the Stick-On inserts were not mentioned or advertised on wax pack wrappers in 1963. The complete 1963 Topps Stick-Ons set is packed with HALL-OF-FAMERS and contains 46 stickers measuring 1-1/4" x 2-3/4". The Stick-Ons come in 2 distinct variations. They can be found either with blank-backs or the scarcer variation with instructions printed on the back. The Stick-Ons have with an approx. 3/16" "white" band running left to right across the mug shot. This band appears to be lighter than the printing above and below it. Theory is that it is an aging effect caused by the backing strip. TOP STARS: Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron, Sandy Koufax, Stan Musial, Al Kaline, Carl Yastrzemski, Ernie Banks and tons MORE !!! |

1951 O-Pee-Chee BaseballAlso know as OPC or Topps Canada, the 1971 set is an interesting set to collect and is really very different than its Topps Counterpart for a number of reasons:OPC changed approx. 20 cards including the introduction of some of the earliest "traded" cards and added more Expo player cards at the expense of #202 "Reds Celebrate" and #289 "White Sox Team". The first four series had different card backs that included French translations - this resetting of the type created several uncorrected errors including ERA’s that look like Batting Averages and Vice-Versa. This set is legendary for its short print run (5% - 10% of Topps’ Production). Anyone who has tried to collect older OPC will attest to the fact that they are hard to find, even in Canada. TOP ROOKIE: Steve Garvey TOP STARS: Nolan Ryan, Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Pete Rose, Ted Williams & MORE !!! |
