(part 2) Error Card - essentially, a card with a wrong player photo, inaccurate bio, or any characteristic that separates it from correctivity. Baseball card history is rich with such mutations. History of Football Cards (T3) The first football card appeared over 100 years ago? 1894 Mayo football cards were the first known cards depicting football players. This set contained 35 cards of the top Ivy League players including one of the most sought after football cards ever made with less than 10 known copies. Picturing an unnamed player, believed to be John Dunlop from Harvard, it is valued at around $18,000 in EX-MINT condition. In 1933, Goudey Gum Company released a multi-sport "Sport Kings" set. This popular set included cards of Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, Knute Rockne along with many other greats from many other sports including Baseball and Boxing. It took 15 years for the next football card set when Bowman and Leaf football cards hit the market. There have been football card sets issued ever year since.

1959 Fleer Ted Williams Ted Williams was one of the greatest hitters ever to play the game ! The 'Splendid Splinter' played from 1939-1942 and 1946-1960 all with the Boston Red Sox. He missed 1943 thru 1945 due to military duty when he was a pilot during the wars. For his career he hit .344 with 521 home runs. Ted Williams was one of the biggest stars baseball has ever seen, and his baseball cards remain very popular and valuable. Ted's rookie card was in 1950 Bowman and he was exclusive with Bowman from 1950 thru 1954. In 1954 he also allowed Topps to make his cards which they did from 1954 thru 1958. In 1959 Fleer signed Ted Williams away from Topps and assumed the star Ted Williams would be retiring, put out an entire 80-card set of cards highlighting Ted Williams and illustrating his life both in and out of baseball. Williams decided late in the fall to resign for another year perhaps damaging the sets impact. Today these cards remain extremely popular with most of the cards in teh set still quite affordable. There is one very rare card in this set, #68 picturing Ted with Bucky Harris. UNFORTUNATELY Topps had Bucky Harris under exclusive contract and Fleer had to quickly halt production of this card making it a significant SHORT PRINT. Only a few made it out to the public. This card is quite rare, hardly ever seen and a plain old simple checklist making it the perfect candidate for counterfeiting. NOTE: This card has been counterfeited in significant quantities so you should be very, very careful when looking to acquire this card. Other interesting cards are those that picture Ted with Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, Sam Snead and Jim Thorpe. In addition, cards of Ted fishing or with his airplane are also very popular.

1974 Topps DECKLE EDGE This 72-card test issue set was released with a very limited distribution on only the East Coast around Massachusetts making them quite scarce. They were Officially simply called "Topps Baseball Photos" but their serrated or "DECKLED" edge gave them the name they go by today. The 2 7/8" x 5" inch cards were sold in either a 2 card pack with gum or a 3 card pack with no gum for 5 cents. The cards were meant to have the look of the black and white movie star photos from the 1950's and feature a black & white photo with a blue facsimilie autograph on the front. The backs make this very scarce test issue even more interesting ! They feature handwritten script of the player's name, team, position & date and location of the photograph as well as a mock newspaper article on the player's career. This was Topps 2nd "Deckle Edge" issue, their first being their smaller and much more common 1969 Topps Deckle Edge which were inserts in certain series of packs of 1969 Topps cards. Variations of 1974 Topps Deckle Edge do exist, making this issue even more fun and challenging to collect. The backs can be found in either gray or a much scarcer white version. Also, a more limited proof version with non-scalloped edges exists and occasionally can be found.
