During the baseball season, the largest number of cards were made. As the schedule progressed into September, when there would be less interest in baseball cards , Topps for one, specifically decreased production and hence much less product was available. As a result, a scarcity-factor was created and a premium holds for these first type of "short-printed" cards. Inserts - special randomly-inserted cards which are not part of the regular set. Many modern inserts are sequentially-numbered and rarer than the card sets into which they are inserted. O-Pee-Chee / OPC - a subsidiary of Topps, this card issue was produced specifically for distribution in Canada. Promotional Card - generally referred to as cards issued to show what the product will look like on release and intended to help spur future sales. Often called a "promo" card. Reprint - cards issued to reproduce the originals. With the current trend of vintage reprints, the new versions have a distinguishing characteristic evidenced by numbering. Restored - a card or piece of memorabilia which someone has tried to return to a "like-new" condition. A restored card is considered to be of very little value. Rookie Card - any league-licensed, widely distributed card to feature a player in his first year of trading cards. Series - a group of cards within an issue deliberately split up by the manufacturer to distribute at different times of the year. (i.e.- vintage 1st series cards 1-100 were released in April and 2nd series cards 101-200 were released in July, etc.). Short Print (SP) - a card printed to a lesser quantity than other cards in a set. Many recent short prints are also individually & serially-numbered. Protecting and Storing your Baseball and Football Card Collection (T7) There are many different ways to protect, organize and store your sportscards. Soft Sleeves The most basic protector for cards are "soft sleeves" which are often called "penny sleeves". A "soft sleeve" is a thin plastic pouch into which the card can be placed protecting it from scratching and having the gloss rubbed off. Soft sleeves are very inexpensive. They come in packs of 100 with prices as low as around 3 soft sleeves for a penny. Top Loads Top-loads are rigid plastic holders that also provides protection against bending and creasing. They are called top-loads because they have a thin opening at the top allowing you to insert the card. They come in a large variety of sizes from 3-1/2 by 4-1/2 for the normal recent issues upto 8-1/2 x 11 for magazines and even larger. There are also thicker ones perfect for the thick game-used memporabilia cards. We highly recommend putting the card in a soft sleeve first to prtoect it from scratching and moving around before putting it in the top-load. Screw-Down Acrylic Holders These are appropriate for your better, more expensive cards. As the name implies, small screws hold two pieces of acrylic together. They come in a variety of thickness upto 1 or 2 inch acrylic slabs that not only protect the card but can funciton as a paper weight. A type of screw-down called single-screws are the most popular. They are named for the fact that they only use 1 screw to open or close the holder. This makes them easier and quicker to use while providing the same type of protection. They are also much less expensive costing as little as .39 each in quantity. while the thicker 1 inch or 2 inch acrylic screw-downs can cost upto several dollars each.

1959 Fleer Ted Williams Ted Williams was one of the greatest hitters ever to play the game ! The 'Splendid Splinter' played from 1939-1942 and 1946-1960 all with the Boston Red Sox. He missed 1943 thru 1945 due to military duty when he was a pilot during the wars. For his career he hit .344 with 521 home runs. Ted Williams was one of the biggest stars baseball has ever seen, and his baseball cards remain very popular and valuable. Ted's rookie card was in 1950 Bowman and he was exclusive with Bowman from 1950 thru 1954. In 1954 he also allowed Topps to make his cards which they did from 1954 thru 1958. In 1959 Fleer signed Ted Williams away from Topps and assumed the star Ted Williams would be retiring, put out an entire 80-card set of cards highlighting Ted Williams and illustrating his life both in and out of baseball. Williams decided late in the fall to resign for another year perhaps damaging the sets impact. Today these cards remain extremely popular with most of the cards in teh set still quite affordable. There is one very rare card in this set, #68 picturing Ted with Bucky Harris. UNFORTUNATELY Topps had Bucky Harris under exclusive contract and Fleer had to quickly halt production of this card making it a significant SHORT PRINT. Only a few made it out to the public. This card is quite rare, hardly ever seen and a plain old simple checklist making it the perfect candidate for counterfeiting. NOTE: This card has been counterfeited in significant quantities so you should be very, very careful when looking to acquire this card. Other interesting cards are those that picture Ted with Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, Sam Snead and Jim Thorpe. In addition, cards of Ted fishing or with his airplane are also very popular.

1974 Topps Stamps Topps released this 240 stamp issue in 1974. These 1 by 1 1/2 stamp are unnumbered and feature a color photo with the player's name, team and position inside a colored oval at the bottom of the stamp. Very similar to their 1969 Topps Stamps issue, the 1974 Topps Stamps were issued in panels of 12 stamps. Alomg with the stamps, Topps also issued a set of 24 stamp albums, one per team, to store the stamps. Due to double prints and different combinations of stamps on panels there are actually 24 different 12-Stamp panels. The stamps were not inserts but a totally separate issue and were sold in packs containing one 12-Stamp panel along with one stamp album. The 1974 Topps Stamps set is packed with SuperStars including over 23 members of the Baseball Hall-of-Fame with greats such as Nolan Ryan, Hank Aaron, Johnny Bench, Ernie Banks, Pete Rose, Reggie Jackson, Al Kaline, Joe Morgan, Willie Stargell, Tom Seaver and plenty more !!! The set even contains seldom seen ROOKIES of Dave Winfield and Dave Parker.

1952,1953,1954,1955 Red Man TOBACCO Red Man Tobacco issued baseball cards in 1952, 1953, 1954 and 1955, making them the only tobacco company to do so since 1920. The cards are very attractive with a large, painted portrait and a short player's bio on the front. On the back is company advertising. 1/2" tabs at the bottom of each card could be exchanged for a prize. The exchange rate was 50 tabs for one free Big League style baseball cap. Thus, cards with the tabs still intact are much, much, harder to find making them more valuable. Without the tabs it is difficult to determine which year certain players were issued. It is usually easiest to determine the year by looking at the expiration date on the back. Subtract 1 from the expiration year to determine the year of the card. Each set is made up of 25 players from each league all personally selected by Editor J.G. Taylor Spink of the "Sporting News". Managers from each league were included in the 1952 and 1953 sets.
